Old Weang Ping
About This Spot
Stepping into Old Weang Ping feels like arriving at a well-loved neighborhood gem where the air hums softly with a mix of nostalgic Thai tunes and gentle chatter. The pace here is unhurried and welcoming, inviting you to settle in and savor the moment without rush. It’s a place where the warmth of family runs through the walls, not just in the faces behind the counter but in the care woven into every detail—from the vintage decor that nods to decades past to the inviting clink of ceramic cups filled with freshly brewed Thai coffee.
The atmosphere strikes a balance between cozy familiarity and a subtle sense of ceremony, making it just as perfect for an easy weekday dinner as it is for lingering over conversations on a weekend night. The floors are well-trodden, and the corners whisper stories from locals who’ve returned time and again, drawn by more than just the food—it’s the feeling of being among friends who take pride in sharing a slice of their culture.
At the heart of the experience is the food, which carries gentle surprises across every bite. Rather than a flashy parade of dishes, the menu offers comfort and vibrancy in familiar favorites—rich, layered curries; spring rolls with a satisfying crunch; and noodle dishes that are fragrant, textured, and deeply satisfying. The flavors tend to lean into authentic spice levels that make each mouthful a thoughtful balance of heat and harmony, while sweeter treats like sticky rice with mango or a scoop of coconut ice cream provide a soothing counterpoint.
Whether you’re drawn in by the spirited lychee iced tea or the earthy depth of a coconut milk soup, each sip and bite speaks of hands that have honed recipes over years, if not decades. The genuine delight in the kitchen and dining room, captured in shared smiles and careful plating, creates a quiet celebration of Thai food’s approachable richness—a reminder that here, every meal is an invitation to slow down, connect, and rediscover the simple joy of comfort and flavor.

Eating inside is highly recommended. Loved the 60s - 70s Thai music, the exterior and interior decor, the small family feel with the workers and family, the price range, the food presentation, and most importantly, the food and drinks. The Grilled Chicken with veggies and soup were really flavorful, and they have solid Thai coffee. Want to try the lychee iced tea next time.

I've lived in the area for almost 20 years and have eaten in and plenty of takeout, so I'm not sure what people mean when they say new ownership. The fantastic couple (and their daughter?) run things and do s great job. The food has gotten better over the years, but be sure to order with a spicy level as it won't be as flavorful when 'mild/not spicy' (you shouldn't be eating Thai if you can't handle some heat). Eating in is a great experience as from when you approach to when you leave the atmosphere, setting, and service are all very Thai. We joked and laughed with the older male owner and happily ate everything served. Highly recommend for the atmosphere, food and service.

Ordered to go (phone, in person pick up). Satay chicken quality is amazing, with rich peanut sauce. Pad see ew and pineapple fried rice also cooked very well. Portion size reasonable. Pricing is reasonable. Update: added video, and tried dine in. Khao Soi is rich in flavor and is recommended (5/5). Fried Whole Fish is well made , with lots of fruits on top (4/5). Interior design of restaurant is cute ; as it is remodeled from an old home. Free street parking is easy.

Town classic! Real Thai food at its finest. Country home style cooking!! Barbarian soup, coconut milk soup, curry shrimp pancake… all fire.

My husband and I live in Tucson and are visiting San Francisco for the weekend. We are avid Thai food lovers and since Old Weang Ping got good reviews, we decided to try it. Hands down, BEST thai food we've EVER had!! The restaurant was clean and had a great atmosphere. The owner was so nice and said he has owned the restaurant for over 40 years! Highly recommend stopping here for great thai food and an overall great restaurant experience! (Chicken panang curry pictured)

With the semblance of a Thai backpacker outpost, the wood finishes, tropical garden entry and intimate booth seating make for a truly unique dining experience in Oakland. An elderly mom-and-pop duo serve home style Thai cooking — smaller portioned and very reasonably priced, making it perfect for sharing multiple dishes family-style. Roti (crispy fried flatbread with fragrant curry dipping sauce), an excellent starter. Green Papaya Salad, crisp, refreshing and just the right amount of funk from fish sauce. Pineapple Duck Curry from the daily specials, exactly as described — tasty but not the best. Pad See Ew (with choice of protein), pretty standard. While dishes may not change your world, the setting makes for a unique dining experience worth driving for. Cash only.

Hesitant to review because this is my secret date location. The food is fresh, the vegetables crispy and not overcooked. The flavor is amazing and the owners are sweet and speak perfect English. I've been eating here for 20+ years and loved it Everytime plus the price is unbeatable. Note is CASH ONLY! If your looking to impress a date take them here.
